Belgian football fans cause 'earthquakes' during match

15:38 28/06/2016

The seismograph of the Belgian Royal Observatory in Uccle on Sunday evening registered seismic activity after each of Belgium's four goals against Hungary, writes Sporza. The Royal Observatory also registered a small earthquake last week immediately following Nainggolan's goal in the match against Sweden.

It is not clear how many celebrating fans contributed to the small earthquakes, says Dr. Koen Van Noten of the Royal Observatory. "Two years ago, we measured vibrations during the World Cup, as well, but then there was a big screen just 600 meters from our seismic monitor in Uccle. This screen is not there now.”

"The vibrations therefore must be caused by a very dispersed group of people watching at home or in the pub,” confirms Van Noten. “Our measurement points in less urbanised areas also show clear peaks after each goal.”
