Belgian farmers plan Schuman protest on Monday

Several dozen Belgian cattle farmers will bring their tractors to Schuman roundabout on Monday morning to protest about the difficulties they face.

The convoy of tractors will set off from Hainaut province and is due to reach the EU district at 11.00.

The demonstration, organised by farmers' union Fugea, coincides with a meeting of European agriculture ministers in Brussels.

Farmers are concerned about free trade negotiations between the EU and South America, which they say could drive down European meat prices due to cheaper foreign imports and put livelihoods at risk. The sector is affected by falling milk prices.
