La Monnaie/De Munt Orchestra and Chorus is offering a super-powerful programme not to be missed by strong-stomached music aficionados.
The centrepiece is A German Requiem, Brahms’s longest, most emotionally gut-wracking and quite possibly most popular work. It is not a mass for the dead, as in traditional Roman Catholic liturgy (beginning ‘Grant them eternal rest, O Lord’), but a consolation piece for the living (beginning ‘Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted’).
Christian dogma is purposely omitted; a humanist, if still sacred, worldview pervades throughout. Lawrence Renes, shown above, conducts, with soprano Sally Matthews and baritone Dietrich Henschel as soloists.
Leading off, Henschel narrates Schoenberg’s 1947 A Survivor from Warsaw, a Holocaust commemoration that may be the most harrowing eight minutes in 20th-century music. Schoenberg wrote the text as well as the appropriately atonal score.
