Brussels’ branch of the Goethe Institut celebrates its 50th anniversary with a gala concert by the Cologne-based contemporary music ensemble musikFabrik.
On the programme: works by two recently deceased giants of 20th-century music, both residents of Cologne (Karlheinz Stockhausen and Mauricio Kagel). Commissioned by the Goethe Institut for this occasion in 2007, Stockhausen’s Erwachen, for cello, trumpet and soprano sax, receives its world première here.
British tenor Martyn Hill joins musikFabrik in the first Belgian performance of Kagel’s final completed work, In der Matratzengruft.

For these lines there are only some remarks in the typescript concerning the instrumentation he had planned ('lange Töne' Vl, Vc, Kb). The six bars before are not completed, either - they exist as an outline only.
