Anti-poverty events around Belgium on Tuesday

20:28 16/10/2017

Anti-poverty marches will take place throughout Belgium on Tuesday - including two in Brussels - with the goal to "make visible the invisible".

One in five people in Belgium suffers some form of poverty or social exclusion, according to official figures, and Tuesday's demonstrations coincide with the UN's 30th International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Non-profit associations specialising in help for the vulnerable will lead the marches. One will set off from Maximilian Park, the other from Cinquantenaire Park, both at 9.00.

The two processions will converge at midday near Place Annessens before jointly marching towards Saint-Gilles.

An anti-poverty fundraising evening is planned at the Théâtre Saint-Michel from 18.00, bringing together about 30 non-profit associations, both French- and Dutch-speaking.

Similar events will be held in Wallonia and Flanders, including performances, debates, film screenings and exhibitions.
