Animals seized after negligence checks

12:09 04/10/2012

The Federal Public Service for Health ordered the seizure of almost 1,700 animals because of abuse or negligence by owners in the first six months of 2012. After 1,195 checks by inspectors, a further 167 reports were written and 138 warnings were issued. The majority of the 1,672 animals seized were dogs (435), cats (187) and rabbits (295), with cows and horses also featured. The total is a slight improvement on last year. The majority of the animals are housed in shelters; others, such as rabbits, are put down.
