Angry Brussels merchants return to city hall
Hundreds of owners of businesses in and around the Brussels pedestrian zone will gather this afternoon at city hall to demand the resignation of mayor Yvan Mayeur, writes Bruzz. The merchants find that the mayor does not listen to their needs, and that the pedestrian zone is responsible for their significant losses.
The demonstrators want to again draw attention to the problem during today's city council meeting. Pressure from the city's merchants already led the council to partially re-open Rue du Midi and Rue de Laeken to traffic. But the city can do more, say the merchants, who are especially unhappy about the lack of communication and dialogue around the introduction of the pedestrian zone one year ago.
The disgruntled business owners will gather in front of city hall at 16.30, and a small delegation will be allowed to attend the council meeting. The initiators of the meeting expect between 250 and 500 supporters to show up. A similar action in late April drew about 200 people.

These people need to get a life. What a surprise that the businesses that actually had planned for the pedestrian zone don't seem to be complaining! I guess these idiots waited until it was too late to realize Oma and Opa Vlaming aren't going to drive into the centre anymore (and good goddamn riddance I say).
Also interesting that the study from Atrium that was published today showed a sizeable increase in shoppers in the pedestrian zone and the reason people give for shopping in the area is the existence of the zone...
