All-Belgian supermarket looks for new location in Dansaert

03:09 20/11/2015

BelgoMarkt, the supermarket with all Belgian products, will not open in the Brussels commune of Saint-Gilles as originally planned. The owners of the building in Rue de Tamines found other renters, report the BelgoMarkt founders They have therefore started the search for a new location, preferably in the Dansaert neighbourhood.

The new supermarket selling 100% Belgian products had plans to open in a former cinema in Rue de Tamines, not far from the Barrière, in the heart of Saint-Gilles. "We had asked the owner to send the contract," BelgoMarkt co-founder Melanie Mikiels told brusselnieuws.be. "Two days later, after no response, I called back and then we were told that someone else had taken an option on the property."

The newspaper La Libre on Tuesday wrote that a Lidl store would open in the building, however Lidl so far denies rumours that it will open a branch in Rue de Tamines. "We would very much like to open a store in Saint-Gilles, but have no specific location in mind," said spokesman Pieterjan Rynwalt on brusselnieuws.be.

BelgoMarkt is now searching for another location. "In Saint-Gilles there are no other suitable locations," said Mikiels. "Because we work with local suppliers, we need a street that is not too crowded, and where the delivery truck can park easily."

The founders have therefore set their sights on an area near the canal in the trendy Dansaert neighbourhood.
