60,000 protesters in Brussels for national demonstration

About 60,000 people participated in the national demonstration on Tuesday in Brussels, according to official figures from the police. The anti-austerity demonstration was mostly peaceful, with the exception of some disturbances around Boulevard du Midi by a small group of demonstrators, writes Bruzz.

About 20 to 30 protestors threw stones and fences at the police on Boulevard du Midi, but the situation is now under control as the demonstration also comes to an end and a round of speeches begins at Brussels South Station.

The demonstrators carried slogans criticising the possible abolition of the 38-hour week, while others mocked Belgian politician Kris Peeters for his statement that “everyone is living beyond their means”.

“If we don't stand up for the common man, nobody will. That's why we are syndicated," the union participants said.
