30% more women freezing eggs

10:19 03/08/2015

The number of women who choose to freeze their egg cells is on the rise, according to professor Dominic Stoop of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine at the University Hospital Brussels. This year, 30 per cent more women froze their eggs this year than in 2014, the fertilisation expert told De Morgen.

Most of the woman Stoop treats are single, he reports. “They want to have children, but are waiting to find the right man. Till that time, the frozen egg cells give them peace of mind.”

However, since 2009, only 250 women have come to Stoop to freeze their eggs. Cost is a main hindrance, he says, where freezing a single egg can cost €2000.
