25 arrested in Kurdish demonstration on Grand-Place

18:58 11/03/2018

Police arrested 25 Kurdish protestors in the early hours of Sunday morning after they held an unauthorised demonstration in Brussels' Grand-Place and refused to leave.

The city's Kurdish community has staged several spontaneous protests in recent weeks against Turkish military action in Afrin in northern Syria - an enclave controlled by the Kurdish militia YPG, one of the main American allies in the fight against Islamic State.

Dozens of demonstrators gathered in the Grand-Place late on Saturday night. Police intervened around midnight and a group who had refused to leave the square around 2.00 in the morning were arrested. They were released without charge four hours later.
