Not only does this show have a clever name but also an interesting premise. During the middle ages, pilgrims, crusaders and traders passed from Europe to the Holy Land through Byzantine territories, encountering Byzantium’s culture and bringing it home with them. However, it is only during the late 14th and during the 15th century that the Low Countries began looking at Byzantine models as inspiration.

Early Netherlandish painters as Jan Van Eyck, Rogier Van der Weyden, Hans Memling and Martin Schongauer adhered to Byzantine artistic rules but came up with something completely different.
