2017 was Belgium's worst year for traffic

Traffic jams in Belgium are getting worse and worse, according to an end-of-year study by motorists' association Touring Mobilis.

2017 was the worst year on record for road congestion - and the jams are increasingly happening off-peak and on secondary roads as drivers try to avoid busy spots.

The worst day was Monday 11 December, with an all-time high of 1,294km of queuing traffic at 11.00 in the morning because of heavy snowfall. Sunday 10 December was in second place, with 755km.

According to Touring's annual study, more flexible work arrangements have led to a rise in off-peak congestion, as more motorists want to drive outside of the rush hour.

In 2014, there were no days when traffic jams exceeded 400km. In 2017, the 400km mark was broken 15 times.
