10,000 parking spaces coming to Brussels’ green belt

11:42 21/04/2015

Brussels mobility minister Pascal Smet and mayor Yvan Mayeur on Monday discussed plans for more car parks on the outskirts of the capital. The intention is to encourage commuters and visitors to leave their cars there and take public transport or bicycles into the city centre, reports brusselnieuws.be.

The new car parks would ensure fewer cars enter the city, which means less pollution and less congestion, according to Smet. They will be built close to metro or train stations, so that travellers can easily get into the city, and will be more accessible and cheaper than those in the centre of Brussels, says Smet.

Thousands of new park-and-ride spaces will be added to existing parking at Stalle (380 places), Delta (350), Hermann-Debroux (200), CERIA (199), Kraainem (172), Roodebeek (189) and Lennik/Erasmus (100).

The plans also include the construction of five new car parks, at Heysel stadium, Berchem-Sainte-Agathe station, Bordet station, along the A12 motorway near Esplanade and at the University Hospital UZ Brussel.

The works are scheduled to start in late 2016.
